Samarkand
Samarkand meant “the land of heart’s desire” in the archaic Persian tongue. Santa Barbara’s Samarkand is a hilly, elevated neighborhood with stunning mountain and Riviera views, convenient shopping and dining and a very pleasant atmosphere. The Samarkand retirement center, formerly the stately Samarkand Persian Hotel, is one of America’s most beautiful and prestigious retirement centers and it is situated on a hilltop in the midst of this neighborhood.
Like San Roque, Samarkand contains a blend of many architectural styles such as Spanish Colonial, English Tudor, French Normandy, California Redwood, Italianate and American Colonial. However, the standard side of lots in Samarkand (which are typically 50′ x 150′) are deeper than those in San Roque (which are often 100′ deep) and Samarkand residents appreciate use of the sidewalks which are on every street.
